A breakdown in normal functioning of the nervous system, resulting in a reduced capacity to react appropriately to real or perceived threats. Instead of a gradual response to escalating threat, a dysregulated nervous system typically is very activated (anxious) or very shut-down (depressed) with not much useful in between.
