I've watched one episode of Spendaholics on BBC iPlayer, and it was about a woman who works in fashion, and spent a lot of money to look good (with designer labels) and feel better about herself. I've also seen clips from other shows, where a man was overprotective of his sick mother, and that influenced his spending habits.
I'm curious to learn about other factors that may influence overspending. I'm an overspender myself, and I'm not embarrased to admit it. I'm about £10,000 in debt. and I spend my money mostly on eating out and buying expensive gadgets. Interestingly I've neglected other parts of my life, such as buying nice clothes and haircuts.
My mother came from a very poor background - she grew up in China, and her family abandoned her when she was very young. So she taught herself to look after herself, and sought help from neighbours and friends. As you can imagine, when she grew up she was very frugal with her money.
Why am I so different?
Thankfully, I've terminated my relationship with credit cards - I just don't use them anymore. But I've still got a £8000 loan to pay off, and another £2000 in credit cards to pay off.
What do you think?
