Hi,

I am currently having some kind of therapy which is helping me a bit. It isn't psychotherapy but its aim is to release emotions and believes that anxiety etc is caused by trapped emotion.

This is the same theory as psychotherapy as far as i'm aware its just it doesnt go as deep into the past as psychotherapy does. It concentrates on what emotions I am holding back at the present time and helps me to express them. Although it has helped me realised that I have surpressed emotions for a very long time, perhaps all my life, due to a tough childhood.

After having read What's wrong with you, I can realise how good psychotherapy would be at getting to the root of trapped emotion. However, as I now realise where my problems come from and am getting help to get express myself more does anyone think I still would need psychotherapy to 'thaw trapped emotion' or is what I am doing exactly the same.

Thanks for reading

Hi Tony,

Sounds like the therapy you have had so far is having a positive effect for you. There's no reason why you can't try many different therapies, so why not psychotherapy? Have you asked your current therapist the question you posed in your posting? They may be able to provide some valuable guidance for you.

Many people will agree that suppressing the traumas of the past can lead to problems in the present. If you sense that your current therapy isn't really getting at the root of your problems, why not try something else?

Good luck and best wishes, D.

Thanks for the reply DC.

The only problem is I find it so confusing. I've also been referred to cbt with the nhs. Some have told me this is a kind of psychotherapy and some hae said its seperate.

Say i was to book a psychotherapy appointment are they all the same? Or is there lots of various kinds of the treatment? If so which one is the best and which type is recommended in the book? I must be honest I find it all to complex for me to look into.

Hi Tony,

It's too much for me, too. Try asking your current therapist and if they can't or won't give you a satisfactory answer maybe you can ask your physician. He or she should be able to give you guidance. Maybe you could ask Benjamin about this in his online column. He may have some words of wisdom. Good luck, D.
