I'm new to this site, having just marvelled at the masterful but compassionate assistance for Dre from Benjamin Fry on Spendaholics.
The emotional issues behind debt surely need to be addressed, and I know it's time for me to tackle mine. However I hope I'm not treading on anyone's toes by posting a recommendation for another important source of help - the Consumer Credit Counselling Service.
My head was probably going under for the last time when I found these heroes. They're generous with their time, entirely non-judgemental, and a source of great advice and support. Without going into too many details, they're running a repayment programme for me, negotiating with my creditors for me, and not taking a penny of my money to do it. Any number of firms will do the same but charge you for it. The CCCS are a registered charity and will see that the money you give them goes entirely to paying off your debt.
There are of course other organisations that can help; it's just that the CCCS are the ones I'm most grateful to.
Debt is a horribly lonely thing, and I am so grateful for sites like this that allow you to discuss it. However if you need some practical financial advice and support, the CCCS are well worth looking at.

I'll second that! The CCCS are fantastic, a big source of help both practically and emotionally. They are very reassuring. When I contacted them I was really desperate, having just been told my only option was bankruptcy. They gave me lots of reassurance and practical help, dealt with my creditors, and arranged a repayment programme. Also they don't charge anything for their services, unlike many debt management companies. So yes, it is definitely without doubt worth contacting CCCS if you have debt problems.
