Hi,

In Lacan's theory, as I understand it, Lacan refers to The Mirror stage as a point when a child misrecognises the image of itself as its self. This then leads to a grasp of others and Otherness. However, my question is this:
What if I never accepted the Mirror stage, never misrecognised the mirror image, indeed always saw it as just an image, and not me, and have continued to do so, (avoiding mirrors, photographs, descriptiopns and perceptions of me by others) What are/could be the implications of this, and is there an alternative to this stage? Also what position does one occupy in the Symbolic, if this stage is 'skipped'/avoided?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
