Recently retired ,I found I went into what my physcoligist calls a moderate depression. Money is tight and I want to return to work but it`s difficult being anxious and having (last 2 months) insomnia. Stomach is bothering me -was endoscoped and told I was okay, acidy diet I was on did it and I would heal. I lost it and went into depression. Also I was at the wtc on 9-11.

I'm sorry to hear of your difficulties. Iím struck by how your you finish your post; even the way that the sentence begins with ìalsoî as if it's perhaps inconsequential. And yet it would appear that you may already be aware that your survival of the attacks on the World Trade Centre is not inconsequential information.

You are exhibiting some of the symptoms that are loosely associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. I'm no expert on the specifics of this syndrome, but it does seem that depression, anxiety and insomnia are common symptoms; and perhaps they have built up to a level within you where they're possibly affecting your physical health becasue of the difficulty you are having expressing them emotionally.

There are many resources for people with post dramatic stress disorder and I would imagine that particularly there are organisations that will support survivors of the attacks on the World Trade Centre. I would encourage you to make contact with these specific organisations, since you will undoubtedly find more comfort from the care of experienced professionals and in the company of other sufferers with the same very specific symptoms as yourself.

Perhaps all that I can add is probably the general point that most emotional issues are manifested within us as a result of our inability to connect with and to evacuate difficult repressed emotions that have decided to re-emerge. This can often be a very, very difficult and stressful experience. But it does seem that the opposite of this experience (which is to prevent the emotions coming out) can be even more confusing, even more stressful, and even more difficult, particularly if this stasis persists over any reasonable length of time.

Hopefully, if you're able to engage with some of the techniques that are on offer to help sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorder, you'll find that the depression lifts and the anxiety becomes less prevalent; and with that the insomnia should pass to. With luck you'll find that this also shows an improvement in your physical health, and the stomach will become less sensitive to particular diets or lifestyle. I wish you the best of luck.
